NIPPERS 2021/2022

Season starts December 5 2021

We have a nippers program that runs fortnightly on Sundays and board practice on alternate Friday afternoons. Surf Life Saving NSW is working with NSW Health on ways to keep our nippers, volunteers and community safe. We have a Covid Safe plan and will be following health orders around distancing, checking in and vaccination. Please sign up as a member and learn vital surf awareness and safety skills! Updates will be on our Facebook page.

Usual program

Still water & ocean swim

The surf club does not teach swimming, however it is a major component of surf lifesaving so it is strongly recommended that your child takes part in a regular learn-to-swim or squad program at their appropriate level. It is also strongly recommended that Nippers are provided with regular exposure to the surf on top of their Nippers Sunday Activities.
Still water
All nippers aged under 6 – Under 14 need to complete an annual evaluation which includes a swim and float as part of their registration. This ensures a minimum and safe standard of swimming and survival ability for water activities at nippers. This is a still water swim and float which will be held at Pilot Beach. We will have dates and times soon.
Ocean swim
All nippers aged Under 9 – Under 14 need to complete an annual competition evaluation which includes an ocean swim at Grants Beach North Haven as part of their registration. This ensures a minimum and safe standard of swimming and survival ability for water activities. This allows nippers to compete at carnivals.

Fortnightly activities

Nippers starts at 9.30am sharp on the nominated Sundays throughout the season. Please arrive early to ensure that you have your child’s attendance marked off with their Age Manager. This season we also need to abide by COVID-19 restrictions so all family members who are in attendance need to also sign the register or log in via the QR code. After registering, family members are encouraged to assist with setting up the beach for activities. At the conclusion of Nippers we would love you to help pack away as well. Many hands = light work. The Nippers program can only run efficiently if families assist our volunteers. It is important that each family participating offers some support to the Nippers program, this can be as an age manager, BBQ helper, setting up, packing up the beach, fundraising, water safety, officiating at carnivals, first aid officer. There are many roles that need support if we want to ensure an efficient and exciting Nippers program.

It is compulsory for PINK HIGH VISIBILITY VEST to be worn by all our Nippers. Coloured age caps are also worn while participating in Nippers and Camden Haven competition caps are worn at carnivals.

Other merchandise is also available.

All information regarding Nippers will be posted on our Facebook page. This is our preferred contact method, but bulk emails and SMS texts will also be sent out to members for important information. Please reach out to our Junior Activities Coordinator, Nicole Browne, or any member of the committee if you have any ideas or need any information - we encourage open communication.

Camden Haven SLSC is required to provide water safety while water events are being conducted (training, Nippers, and carnivals). Water safety must hold a proficient Bronze or Surf Rescue Certificate and be dressed in either an orange vest or cap or their red and yellow patrol uniform. Having a number of volunteers to assist in this area is vital in giving our kids the necessary water time to improve their surf skills.

Camden Haven SLSC also needs adults who are willing to obtain their Officials accreditation which will allow them to become an official at competitions. Each club is required to supply officials on a ratio of 1 official to 10 competitors. If we are unable to provide officials, we may be withdrawn from carnivals, or the number of competitors restricted. Please see a committee member if you are interested in becoming an official. Training days are held at certain times in the season at various clubs in our Mid North Coast area.

On alternate Fridays at 4:30pm we hold board training in the calm waters of the Camden Haven River. This helps Nippers, not familiar with using rescue boards or wanting to hone their skills, with balance a
